I don't have kids, but I can imagine the challenge of teaching them what they want to know. I grew up Catholic, too, but stopped to go to Church a few years later than you did. For me it was the need to justify my faith without going against my reason, and I found A Course In Miracles opening many doors I thought to be closed. I made a few lenses about it.
