Great post. I agree it can be really uncomfortable when people want to hug and you are not a hugging sort of person. You have to assess people before they approach - nightmare.

See, I knew there had to be none-hugging industries out there! Hmmm...how to describe the industry (a relatively unknown niche, unless you are in this particular line of work) without giving away the store (so to speak). If I can't make it on my own, I may need to suck up to those huggers at some point down the road. :)

Let's say it has to do with selling used cars and, while I've literally touched more than my share of used cars, I had relatively little interaction with either consumers or used cars dealers. That should make for an interesting puzzle....

Appreciate you stopping to comment, Jon! (And a well-written comment, at that. If you're not blogging already, you should be!)

This is interesting, as my business experience has been almost completely bereft of hugging. And those hugs that have gone down have almost exclusively been (1) at baby showers, or (2) when somebody has left the company. I have neither been party to, nor have I witnessed a single cross-company hug (ie, someone at a company I work for hugging vendors, customers, etc.)

Now that you have left the corporate gig, maybe you can share more about what industry you were in that was so darn huggy. Personally, I prefer my career hug-free, but some of your readers may want to make an industry change :)

Ah mon chere....I think you're onto something. And interestingly, I recently spoke with another professional lady who has noticed the same oddity. What's with all the business hugging???
